Personal alignment
How can we keep our course and our energy in this complex and uncertain environment?
We are surrounded by this “third wave” of mental health; on a daily basis, many people around us tell us about their inability to see the end of the tunnel, their loneliness and their concerns on a professional level. Many talk about being on the verge of a breakdown, so we must attempt as much as possible to provide needed assistance, listening as well to the younger generation, many of whom are suffering, and even much worse.
What can we consider doing in this unprecedented period to relieve the suffering and support people around us? In a coaching session work, personal alignment is always discussed because any change begins with head-heart-body alignment. What does this mean ? Quite simply, to be attentive to one’s emotions, aware of one’s thoughts, receptive to physical feeling in order to assure a certain congruence. This intellectual, emotional and physical approach was highlighted by Audrey Akoun and Isabelle Pailleau in their bestseller “Learning Differently with Positive Pedagogy”. The head corresponds to our thoughts in close connection with our beliefs, the heart speaks our of our emotions and our values, the body is the seat of our emotions.
An Indian proverb says: “take good care of your body so that your soul will want to stay there ».
We have all experienced stressful situations where we feel like we no longer know anything, that we are totally ineffective; or when we are tired, that we have not slept enough making it difficult to concentrate and finally how an altercation or some bad news can have a very negative or even disastrous impact on the attention given to others and to the projects that we are involved in.
Conversely, being in good physical shape gives rise to positive emotional feelings, a sensation all of us have experienced. The head-heart-body approach helps us understand our emotions. We find that in order to live well, to learn well, we must be aware of this need for alignment.
Another way to picture alignment is to use the metaphor of a 3-part rechargeable mental-physical -emotional battery, needing to be fully charged to function efficiently and at full capacity. Are our batteries sufficiently charged? When one part is dead it weakens the whole, the balance and power of all three components is essential for peak performance. Alignment is key to our well-being, our happiness, our performance, our development. It is an essential question that must be anchored in our daily lives. Being aware of one’s non-alignment, and agreeing to talk about it, is already a first step towards returning to balance.
